However, the central performances are exemplary from both Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, exactly as you would expect, although the films ending does somewhat strain one sense of credibility. The gangster genre has not performed as well with critics in recent years as it has in the past. The most interesting entries in this field of late have mainly been international releases, such as Mesrine and The Baader Meinhof Complex. All of which have brought a new European perspective to a traditional genre.
American Gangster strives to be worthy and certainly covers a lot of ground especially in the minute Unrated Extended version yet it strays too far from the historical facts and ultimately despite good performances, feels a little too routine and less than the sum of its parts.
The story has many wider sub plots that are insufficiently developed and subsequently squandered. In many respects, the viewer is left wanting to know more despite the strong central performances. Whether for good or bad reasons, some movies stand out as instantly memorable and really impact the audience. Perhaps some of that comes from the massive number of gangster flicks already in existence. Does this mean Gangster feels derivative or stale? Instead, it simply fails to become something with much of a bang behind it. Both Washington and Crowe are perfectly solid in their roles. Neither part requires a lot of heavy lifting, as I think both actors focus on their usual movie personalities, but they do manage to make the characters reasonably three-dimensional.
I like the quietness and control Washington brings to Lucas. This is a flick made with above average competence, and it keeps our interest through a long running time.
Though it lacks a certain spark to make it something special, it offers an entertaining and involving tale. The additions are largely negligible; many are spare shots of characters reiterating the timetable faced by the soldiers while in the heat of battle, trying to escape an increasing onslaught of enemy personnel and weaponry.
But the movie is a showcase in absolute brutality and it is extremely powerful, almost to the point of becoming exhausting. At minutes, it feels like the Normandy sequence from Saving Private Ryan expanded to a feature unto itself.
