Edd, the smart one with the hat, can manipulate objects and switches in the environment, fire his slingshot, and get hoisted up by his teammates to reach higher ledges. As you progress through this extremely short game, you'll find that each level requires you to use each skill quite frequently.
Though the beginning levels give you a short of tutorial about where to use each skill, you'll quickly find yourself on your own.
Afterwards, the challenge of the game is figuring out exactly which skill to use in which situation. So, in the haunted house level, it may take you a while to figure out how to get a can of grease to drop out of a picture frame. After what seems like a countless amount of time, you may eventually find that you needed to use Eddy's tower ability to grab an urn off a cabinet and put it on a shelf.
Similarly, in one of the later levels you'll need to traverse a muddy bog. Using Edd's slingshot you'll knock down planks to help you get safely across. However, there will be one point where you'll continue to fall into the water, and you'll have to almost accidentally figure out that you needed to boost Edd up to a trailer roof and use his board to knock down a tire onto a tarp to help you get across. You'll play sequences where you'll need to beat a timer, race opponents, or even stealth past town residents.
These stealth sequences are suspiciously similar to Metal Gear Solid, requiring you to hide under boxes and putting question marks over the head of those you're trying to evade when they notice you. Nonetheless, it adds a nice variety to the gameplay, though not much depth. Still, this is a children's game, and as such it works pretty well. There are tons of collectibles to gather, including jawbreakers, chicken eggs that unlocks special game modes like Big Heads, and the costumes that unlock hidden levels.
One of the hidden levels, Edzilla, was actually a lot of fun despite its simplicity. It gives you control of Ed as a fictional monster, and he needs to destroy all the buildings in a city while taking out tank manufacturing plants.
Graphically, the game captures the style of the TV show to an accurate degree with well animated, cel-shaded character models and cartoony backgrounds. Unfortunately there isn't a huge enemy variety, mostly rats, spiders, and squirrels. Too many of the environments look almost exactly the same, save for a few levels, and there is strange graphical flickering in some places. Also, you'll notice loading issues. There's no transition between indoor and outdoor environments.
One second you're approaching a door, the next you're outside, which is disorienting for sure. The game unfortunately suffers from imprecise collision detection which strips away any strategy to the combat. To kill enemies, the best strategy is just to charge forward while slamming the attack button. Each level's music track is a subdued saxophone arrangement which fits with the shows main, whistling theme.
Link to video. The RTA timing of this run is from the Scam 1 pop-up box. As of the time that this TAS was submitted, it is faster than the fastest PC time, and faster than the fastest GameCube time. To be honest, my initial estimates of the TAS of sub 19 minutes was soundly crushed by the final run time of this TAS.
The major time differences can be attributed to both more precise optimization of existing strategies, as well as new found strategies discovered through-out the run.
The gist of the game is to complete six scams for the ever elusive jawbreakers. To complete each scam, you must use each Ed's individual abilities as well as group formations where all three Ed's are used at once.
Each formation is specific to each Ed, so to use a particular formation, a specific character needs to under the player's control.
Ed the one in green has the individual ability to pick up certain objects and throw them. This is used multiple times throughout the run to complete various tasks.
His group formation ability is called the "Batter-Ed", which has Edd and Eddy grabbing on to dear life to Ed. This is used to traverse long distances fast, as well as acting as a battering ram to certain objects which can't be affected in any other way. Using the Batter-Ed is the fastest way of traveling in the game, and is used extensively throughout the TAS. These abilities make Ed the most used character in the TAS. Edd the one in orange has the individual ability to use a slingshot to shoot water balloons.
Water balloons can be shot in both first and third person, with first person view allowing more accurate shots, while third person is more random. The water balloons are able to knock down specific obstacles, and is used often.
Edd's group formation is called the "Trampol-Edd", which has both Ed and Eddy bouncing Edd up and down, and allows Edd to get to higher places than he can jump. The Trampol-Edd is used a decent amount, with some uses in places not usually intended. Edd is the second most used character in the TAS. Eddy the one in yellow has the individual ability to throw out stink-bombs.
This ability is never used during the run, as there's no practical uses that couldn't be handled by the other characters. His group formation is called the "Tower of Ed's", which has all three Ed's on top of each other's shoulders to traverse narrow path ways and to grab items higher than normal. In this TAS, almost every instance of use was circumvented with the use of precise Batter-Ed movement, with only a few legitimate uses throughout the run.
Because of this, Eddy is the least used character in the TAS. The GameCube version is different from the usually used PC version of the game. The biggest obvious difference is that load times are longer than those on the PC. A negative of the GameCube version of the game is that certain tricks are harder to pull off, such as batter-ed and first person clipping.
If not taking into account load times, GameCube is considered the fastest version of the game. Batter-Ed cancelling is used to cancel the Batter-Ed animation when either hitting a wall which temporary knocks you out or taking damage from an enemy. This is used multiple times to quickly switch characters, as well as quickly switching directions in certain scenarios.
Batter-Ed clipping is using the Batter-Ed into a wall at specific angles, which allow Edd to go through certain fences and walls and then use his group formation to pull the other Ed's through the wall.. It's not used as often as first person clips, but is still useful to go through certains areas. It is possible to use Batter-Ed over narrow passage ways, but it requires to "fall" off the edge of the ground and land back onto the bridge, and get past the point where it checks to see if you're in Tower of Eddy mode or not.
It does not work on platforms on a sharp angle Scam 3. First Person Clip is a clip usually done with Ed standing in a corner, and Edd switching between first person and third person while running into Ed in the corner. With enough switching, Ed will get pushed through the wall, and can then use his group formation to bring the other Ed's through the wall. In certain scenarios, Eddy is required to be on the head of Ed so he doesn't shoot up too high while doing the clip.
The goal of this Scam is to collect ice cubes and get access Rolf's meatball making machine to create snow cones to sell. This level on the whole isn't really too spectacular, but there is some AI manipulation done so that the squirrels are as close to the window as possible.
For the slingshot section with the dolls, it was possible to shoot two water balloons in quick succession instead of waiting for each shot. In this level, The Ed's were refused entry to Jimmy's birthday party, and decide to make their way to the party through the sewers. This is where we start to see some of the bigger glitches used in the run.
After getting by the toxic waste barrels, the Ed's are supposed to activate a bridge so they can cross to the other side. However, it's possible to use a Trampol-Edd instead of creating the bridge to get the Ed's across. With some AI manipulation, it was possible to only worry about hitting the crocodile once before completing the Trampol-Edd. I also take damage from the rats to cancel the second Trampol-Edd animation so I switch to Ed to continue on.
Once we get to the locked gate, another instance of AI manipulation is used to have the crocodile miss Edd as he's working on unlocking the gate, saving even more time. Usually, when getting to the valve to unlock the metal door, it's necessary to clear the rats so they don't attack you.
However, these rats didn't even bother to attack while doing the Trampol-Edd. After getting to Johnny, a first person clip is used to skip the entirety of grabbing the extra valve handle from Johnny to open the door. After this, the rest of the level is pretty normal and is completed without any issues.
In this scam, the candy store is giving out free Jawbreakers, so the Eds take a shortcut to get there. The story takes place a few years after the big picture show, although the Eds still do scams, they do them less often. The story begins with the Eds setting up their latest scam: a firing range with the weapons from "The Eds are Coming". The scam suprisingly turns out to be a sucess, and the Eds get enough money for three jawbreakers each.
On the way to the candy store, a fighter jet comes out of the sky, the whole body on fire. The Eds watch as the jet lands in the construction site, and run to it. When the Eds and other kids reach the construction site, they discover the pilot is still alive, yet dying. The pilot sees the children and attempts to shoot them with an OTs revolver, but he dies in his pilot seat before he could pull the trigger.
The kids start to salvige the plain, and Edd identifies the craft as a Russian jet; however, the only two things of intrest are the pilot's sunglasses which are taken by Kevin , and the pilot's revolver that is taken by Jonny. The kids continue to salvige the jet, and find blueprints of Eddy's house. When they reach the house, they search Eddy's room, and Rolf feels a weak spot in some of the floor boards under Eddy's bed.
When he ripps out the boards, it is shown that the secion under it is completely hollow. Eddy, Edd, Ed, Rolf and Kevin go inside, while the others go back out. When they go inside, they discover a large armory with weapon after weapon, untouched. After discovering the armory, some of the kids start to browse; yet Edd, is extreamly confused on how such an armory would be under Eddy's room. While Edd is thinking of this, Kevin finds a piece of paper, which is revealed to be another piece of blueprints to Eddy's house.
Kevin examines it, and the prints show the space in which the armory stands underground. The confusion and frustration are both cut short when loud noises are heard outside, each of the kids grab a weapon and head outside.
When they get out, they see three helicopters, and soldiers abducting Nazz, Sarah, Jimmy, and Jonny. Ed atempts to save sarah by shooting at the main jet, but the second blocks it by using itself as a shield, and is shot down when Ed shoots the chopper's rotor.
The chopper lands in the trailer park, crushing the Kanker sister's trailer. The kids attempt to reach the chopper, but they are cut off from massive firepower. They look up to see the other two choppers shooting at the five of them; and while Kevin and Ed try to shoot them down, Rolf, Eddy and Edd retreat into the park, and are eventually followed by Ed and Kevin; however, the two are unable to reach the others.
Eddy, Rolf and Edd are running from the choppers when one of them shoots at them yet again, Eddy is nearly caught in the fray and is separated from Rolf and Edd, and finds himeself behind a trailer. Meanwhile, Ed and Kevin have lost the choppers, and are reloading their guns, the two of them spot a truck heading to them, and it eventually pulls up not to far away.
The solders inside turn out to be american troops, and the two confused children board the transport. Edd and Rolf are still running from one of the russian choppers when it is shot down.
